One year olds. The sweetest things on Earth, especially when they’re covered in icing from their first cake! Our one year old just blew out his candle (ok, he had some help) on his first birthday cake last weekend and it had me swooning.
The cake went perfectly with our Woodland One-derland theme.
I originally saw the idea for this cake on Pinterest via Catch My Party and knew I had to figure out a way to make it my own. I got busy baking my tried and true double-tiered Dark Chocolate Cake with Raspberry Buttercream Filling and Vanilla Buttercream Frosting. Yes. You heard me. YUM! You can make it too! If you’re not feeling that adventurous though, make or buy any double-tiered cake and get started on your bunting. Here’s what you’ll need:
– 2 Birch paper straws
– FREE Printable O-N-E Bunting Cake Topper
– White cardstock
– 12″ Baker’s twine or string
– Scissors
– Tape
I started by printing my FREE Printable O-N-E Bunting Cake Topper on white cardstock then got busy with my scissors. Like it? Sign up for our email list and don’t miss our next free printable!
After cutting out the bunting triangles I adhered them to a piece of grey and white baker’s twine with tape. I found my baker’s twine in the Dollar Spot at Target months ago but you can find it at most craft stores these days. If not, any old piece of string will do! I cut about one foot just to be sure I had enough.
Next, grab your birch straws. Can we talk about these for a minute? Omigoodness, they were perfect. Not only did they make a great addition to the party’s drink table but they were the ideal “stakes” for this woodland party cake topper as well. To make the stakes I wrapped the ends of my baker’s twine around the birch straws a few times then tied a simple knot.
I was going for an off center, jaunty kind of look so I pressed the straws into my cake at a bit of an angle, leaving slack at the top so that the bunting would hang sweetly, just like my inspiration cake. You can see that I also cut out a little fox friend (he matched the invitation) and added him to the cake as well.
Voila! So simple. So quick. So much bang for your buck!
Speaking of bang for your buck, if you like what you see and want to make that sweet woodland cake stand as well then you’re in luck! It’s super easy and inexpensive – check out my blog post DIY Woodland Cake Stand.
I hope you love it all and stop back for more. We’d love to do life with you! Happy DIY-ing, friends!
xoxo,
Meg
