Want to throw a Frozen party? Don’t want to break the bank? Read on, friends!
My newly-turned-7-year-old had her heart set on a Frozen party. It was the first time we’d had a party for her friends so my inner nerd took to Google to research locations, pricing, etc. for 12-15 girls. As I sat and stared at my computer screen with open-mouthed astonishment, I came to the conclusion that I am a cheapskate. Thanks anyway, bouncy castle palace – I’m gonna pick up my hot glue gun and give this puppy a try on my own. My goal? To spend around $100 on a magical Frozen fun-derland. If you missed Part 1: DIY Decor & Food, here it is!
In this post, Frozen Brrrrrrrthday Part 2, I’ll be talking about the FUN we had. And boy did we have it! Our party activities funtivities included face painting, coloring pages, a scavenger hunt, foam snowflake decorating, Pin-the-Nose-on-Olaf, and indoor ice-skating. My hubby thought I had over-planned but as it turns out, it was just right for 12 little girls! Here’s how the flow went.
As the girls arrived they each had their face painted. This was a super fun idea but required some prep on my part. To start, I ordered these face paints (source: Amazon, $16). Then I spent some time on YouTube learning how to do two different Frozen-type face paints. Friends, I am not a painter. I am just a mom with an obscene supply of paint brushes and a desire to keep my budget down. I wasn’t interested in paying someone to do this for me so these are the two choices we ended up with!
*Disclaimer: as the party got underway the photographer got a little sidetracked. My apologies for the quality & lack of some photos!*
While faces were being painted the other girls were busy with FREE Frozen coloring pages that I found here.
When everyone had their face painted we did a large group activity – a scavenger hunt! I found this Printable Frozen Scavenger Hunt on Etsy which was just perfect! It was adorable to watch a herd of first-graders try to figure out the clues and run about the house. Their final clue led them to our freezer where I had stashed their prize – Frozen glow-in-the-dark bracelets & necklaces. Total cost for the scavenger hunt & prizes was about $14.25.
After the large-group scavenger hunt we needed to split into smaller groups for “center” type activities. To make this fun we had each girl pick a piece of paper from a hat with either a snowflake, Olaf, or ice skates on it. This was a great way to split them into smaller teams! Here’s a FREE printable of the document I used to make our teams.
FREE Printable Frozen Teams from Loving Mountain Life
Each group rotated between the following centers:
- Team Snowflake started decorating glittery foam snowflakes that I picked up at a Target end-of-season clearance sale last year. (I knew they were going to come in handy one day!) Between the Dollar Store and my craft cabinet the girls went to town decorating with glitter glue, glitter, washi tape, sequins, markers, etc.. Total cost was about $10 for supplies.
(Note: If I didn’t have the foam snowflakes in my craft cabinet I would have had the girls cut out their own paper snowflakes to decorate. I’ve used these FREE patterns from Fabulessly Frugal before and loved them!) - Team Olaf started playing Pin-the-Nose-on-Olaf. I drew Olaf onto 2 sheets of white poster board and had Eva help me color in his mouth and eyes with black Sharpie.
We taped on a few “lumps of coal” made from black cardstock, some sticks for his arms and “hair”, then taped him to the wall using blue painter’s tape.
The noses were cut-out orange scrapbook paper & a good old fashioned Scotch tape donut.
We blind-folded the girls, spun them around, and let the hilarity commence! Thanks to the fact that I had a lot of supplies this game cost me about $3 to DIY.The winner of each round (and a special big-kid helper) scored one of these sweet DIY “Let it Go” Sharpie mugs!
Making them was incredibly easy. I purchased plain white mugs at the Dollar Store for – you guessed it – $1 each! I had a silver Sharpie with which I drew “Let it Go” on one side and a snowflake on the other. I placed the mugs on a cookie sheet, put the cookie sheet into a cold oven, turned the oven to 250 degrees and (after the oven had reached 250) set the timer for 2 hours. After pulling them out of the oven I allowed them to cool completely before tucking a package of Marshmallow Madness hot cocoa inside. The mugs fit perfectly into a clear favor bag that I had leftover from my Woodland One-derland party. I tied it all up with a bit of leftover aqua glitter tulle from my tablescaping and here you have it! Five prizes for $7 total or $1.25 each!
- Team Ice-Skates went to the living room to “ice-skate.” Huh? Yes, you heard me. When Eva originally had the idea for this party she actually said, “I want a Frozen ice-skating party!” yet she refused to entertain the idea of having it at – oh I don’t know – an ice-skating rink?! Haha! But never fear – I wasn’t interested in paying skating rink prices anyway. Google to the rescue! Did you know that you can “ice-skate” on your carpet with a little waxed paper? Well now you do! The girls skated and scootched and twirled and giggled all over the place with squares of waxed paper under their feet. What cheap, easy fun! Total cost for a roll of waxed paper was about $5.
After each team had rotated through the activities we headed to the dining room where we had our final activity – cake and cocoa. More details about that can be found in Frozen Brrrrrthday Part 1: DIY Decor & Food.
As the girls said goodbye we thanked them for coming to the party with this Do you Wanna Build a Snowman favor.
To DIY these favors just tuck the following supplies into a baggie and staple on this FREE printable from The It Mom:
-Large marshmallows (3 each)
-Miniature marshmallows (2 each)
-Pretzel sticks (2 each)
-Chocolate Chips (5 each)
-Candy corn (1 each – not pictured)
Total cost for favor supplies was $8.
At the end of the day we spent about $63.25 on the activities, prizes and favors. Plus we packed SO much fun into two hours! Twelve little girls left with some pretty awesome memories and whole lotta glitter.
I hope you enjoyed both Part 1 and Part 2 of this Frozen Brrrrrthday series. If you were keeping track we spent $105 on a party for TWELVE girls! This included everything from invitations to favors to food to games and prizes. Granted, I had some supplies in my craft cabinet. However, even if I had incurred those incidentals, this party would still cost less than $150. That is less than HALF of what a party costs (NOT including food) at so many party venues. I don’t know about you, but that inspired me to DIY to the max. I hope this post has inspired you to do the same!
With about $100 and some time for DIY-ing you can pull the whole shebang off. So let it go and let me know how Elsa came to life at your house!
Live inspired,
Meg
