“Hi, everyone. I’m Olaf and I like warm hugs!”
Last weekend was a big one in the Mountain house. We traveled to visit with family and took Eva to see her first movie in the theaters with her cousins. Frozen! It was a great movie with an even greater ending. Who else sobbed when you witnessed the “act of true love”?!?! Our sensitive little girl shed a few tears (as did her Mama). Therefore, we thoroughly enjoyed the character Olaf — a silly snowman who made us giggle.
When we returned home from our trip we realized that it was her turn to bring snack to preschool. Thus, Olaf the String Cheese was born!
I love how string cheese is a simple, easy snack to have in our fridge and to share with classmates. I’ve enjoyed turning string cheese into snowmen before. Their cute little scarves and top hats brighten up the snack table at holiday parties. I’ve always followed instructions like these I found on No Biggie. Cute, huh?!
However, Olaf inspired us to take the snowman string cheese to a whole new level! Here’s what you need:
- Black, orange, and brown markers (preferably Sharpies — I only had a black Sharpie and wish I’d had orange and brown too, but our good ol’ Crayola markers worked in a pinch)
- String Cheese
I started with an extra fine point Sharpie and drew his eyebrows. Quite expressive brows there, Mr. Olaf!
Next I added his googly eyes with the extra fine point Sharpie.
Leaving some room for his nose, I drew in Olaf’s mouth — complete with a big, buck-toothed grin!
For his jaw I followed the line of his mouth. I also added a few “darts” along the sides to try to delineate the different parts of his body. Along came his lump-of-coal buttons.
I colored everything in with the fine point Sharpie. In the movie he had cute little snowball feet but I couldn’t figure out a way to make that work so I just opted not to add them. Next was his carrot nose with my orange marker! “I love it. It’s like a little baby unicorn.”
Then finally the brown twigs sprouting out of his noggin.
They were a big hit at preschool! “Watch out for my butt!”

Love this idea. I’m working on them now for my daughter’s 10th tomorrow and I found it was best to let the cheese sticks hang out at room temp for about 5 minutes and then give them a good toweling off before attempting to draw on them. Because of condensations, they are hard to write on otherwise! But like I said, awesome idea!! Thanks!
